A pair of highway closures will snarl traffic around Houston this weekend, from the Galleria to La Porte.
In west Houston, all northbound lanes of West Loop 610 will be closed at U.S. 59 as crews continue work rebuilding the interchange. Drivers heading north on the West Loop will be forced to exit Westheimer Road and continue back onto the highway. The closure lasts from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. Closures typically end sooner if work wraps up quicker than expected.
The work is part of a $259 million project to revamp the interchange. More ramps and lanes could be closed in the following months as the project moves forward. While the closure is inconvenient for drivers, the Texas Department of Transportation says the improvements will help alleviate traffic congestion and make the highway safer.
East of Houston near La Porte, the southbound lanes of Texas Highway 146 will be closed near the Fred Hartman bridge. Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, all southbound lanes from Missouri Street to the bridge will be closed until 5 a.m. Sunday. Access from Texas Highway 146 Business will also be restricted at Wyoming Street, which reopens 3 p.m. Monday.
The closure is so crews can make repairs to the bridge, according to TxDOT.
To reroute, southbound drivers will be directed to Spur 330 northbound to Interstate 10 East. From there, drivers can take I-10 westbound to East Loop 610 southbound, where they can connect back over to Texas Highway 146 via Texas Highway 225 eastbound.
